During the same mishap as the J2F-4 Grumman Duck crash, two other military WWII aircraft went down. Thirty-Five miles from the J2F-4 Grumman crash site a C-53 Skytrooper with five aboard skidded onto the ice sheet during its return flight from Reykjavik, Iceland.
While radio transmissions and flare sightings prove that men survived, conditions did not permit their rescue. Their bodies are presumed to be with the aircraft and buried up to 300 feet below the surface of the Greenland ice sheet. The above-mentioned J2F-4 crew crashed attempting to rescue the B-17 crew attempting to locate the C-53. In all 3 aircraft and 8 men were lost in this operation.FAVF will utilize the identical remote sensing science as for the Grumman Duck crew.
